Again once March in Germany. On the CeBit in Hanover the first crocuses and the sun flowered radiated only in such a way. It was already much warm and not only on the open area of the fair. Became so correctly hot me however only at a status in one of these many halls. There was it, red and simply beautifully... the new BMWS R 1100 RS. I fell in love to over both ears with it. Simply a dream. I must have those - only these red brand-new R 1100 RS it should be starting from this day. One year later and completely coincidentally I came into a BMW Filliale.... and was there her again, bang-red and brand-new, R 1100 RS. Without asking at all for the price, I ordered it and 3 weeks later started we to the first, at that time still extremely zaghaften, exit.

 

Rapidly I became with now my R 1100 RS a heart and a soul. The chassis... a better does not give it simply. Curves cannot be enough. It does not want to break out simply and with a road-hugging property, which I still never experienced before. After few days first 1000 km had driven off and the first Macke adjusted. The clutch slipped. Actually a miracle that I came still into the workshop. But the examination was anyway due.

It was then again healthy in the afternoon, ran again approximately and rapidly. Simply super this driving pleasure. Thus on to the first larger route. Unfortunately the fun was after few kilometers again past. It drove, but as?! The engine lost from km to km at cyclic testing. It to listen was a Graus. The clutch caught to slip again on, so that after 7.500 km no placing behind possibility without special tool was more possible.

I had to thus shift 10,000 km examination plentifully forward. After renewed adjusting round running of the engine was not to be determined yet. At the next crossing was it again out. I must change the workshop! Obviously the mechanics were not sufficient trained in the new model before. Unfortunately a mistake in reasoning. After I had in the morning delivered a struck week long each day my R 1100 RS in the workshop, was the fun at the next crossing already again past. To 6. Working-day the sucking in connections between injection and cylinder were then changed! Now ran my RS again as if it would be again-born. But after further 5,000 km was everything again past. Result: Also today after one three-quarter year and KM status: 58,250 the engine cyclic testing does not hold any longer for than 5,000 km (like for a long time I am to actually still do myself that?).

Well, thus workshop interval not, as already of BMW indicated, all 10,000 km, but evenly after 5.000 km. Annoyance with my " dream " did not stop simply. It went so correctly loosely however only to 15.000 km. Annoyance with the clutch became ever more the nightmare. Owing to the " generosity " of BMW the clutch was exchanged.

" now kann's finally times on quite large route go ", thought I and started toward Turkey, without knowing that my service display already prepared problems with the examination. It had not been noticeable to me before. I started thus into Turkey without oeltemperaturanzeige. Thus we could still live however even. 1000 km per day are not for my BMWS and me a problem. At first anyhow not. Briefly before my target in Bodrum however the rear framework broke. A screw at the plastic fender still held the back part together of my RS. The screws with BMW are suited thus at least somewhat. Owing to the helpful Turkish motorradfahrer we welded together the frameworks of short hand again.

My assistance call arrived with BMW at Munich and one strove probably, but the promised back-up framework did not arrive up to my home journey (14 days later). Thus with the welded home drive. Actually only the oil reading off screw went from the differential gearing solve itself in Romania up to usual angular running of the engine also quite well. Fortunately I noticed it with a short cigarette break. The oil on the rear tire tuned me nevertheless a little thoughtfully. Fortunately I was even on a good, if also not German conditions appropriate, piece of motorway. I may not think about which could have occurred in the Bulgarian Karpaten.

 

At home arrived thus starting from to BMW. Nevertheless probably a larger repair arose. By the way both side suit-cases one enormous hole off had carried each at the inside from the limit break. But BMW recognizes its errors on and replaced these without comment with two new ones.

In the course of this repair (or perhaps already better Rundumerneuerung with approx. 35,000 km) also a new wiring harness was built. As far as good, only that thereby almost the motorcycle would be burned down (it would be nevertheless bare), so that 3. and 4. To be wiring harness-Inge-built had. 3. was for another type. That was however only determined with cables of the taillights.

The re-establishment of my RS took now already 2 weeks. Contently I could not nevertheless be now. Two weeks workshop and the brake disks sounded themselves like a porcelain dish full cutlery with traveled from kopfsteinpflaster. When braking I had me now probably to a very unpleasant Ruckeln (about 3 mm longitudinal play of the brake disk), which lies according to statement of the mechanic in the Tolleranzbereich,

accustom. I however wanted to accustom me not to it and drove to the TUEV. This again found the play of my brake disks probably somewhat largely, wanted however no annoyance with BMW and found this as still justifiable. BMW was surprised probably nevertheless at my travel to the TUEV something and spendierte 2 new brake disks including brake linings for my front wheel. Was I right probably nevertheless?

Unfortunately that was not the only lack up to this KM status and it should not also stop. But I love it simply, my R 1100 RS, and therefore I will probably have to live thereby (or)?

Despite the temperatures of this year I (except with snow) drive each day there freeze already times the visor with -14 degrees under zero from the inside too. But makes nothing, main thing we drives.

It only unfortunately does not drive. The engine makes more and more unpleasant noises. Possibly something rolls (perhaps defective stocks), and I goes again once prematurely to 60.000 km the inspection. Idiots are we drivers now no more with BMW, and one detects also the lack complained of by me. Well, the engine will become adjusted, the two cover plates at the cylinder (probably thought as receipt to the open-loop systems) again sealed (by the way also all 5 TKM) and the front engine cover also (last with 47.000 km) and I gets it after 2 days back (800 DM). Next week then probably comes a consultant. It is to decide whether BMW will insert a new transmission, who actually otherwise?!

All this paid BMW. It cost nothing me thus except annoyance. But it was not even few annoyance. My R 1100 RS much joy is certified however just as much annoyance prepared on 6 June 94, has to 30.3.96 almost 60,000 km behind itself, for me. And now also still the transmission must be changed...

Supplement of the 8.Mai 1996:

Well a cylinder head gasket can go through times, only few days after an BMW inspection nevertheless not!. Thus this time I did not want to renew with that the seal BMW to trouble, the actual reason was the repair price of approx. 400 DM, no that can you more cheaply have thought I 25 DM cost myself the seal, a telephone call with Munich and the workshop manual for the cylinder head gasket came by FAX, so which I could drive after 2 hours of repair again. Also only a quite normal engine is from RS.

Why actually so full electronics does an inserted motorcycle have still another mechanical tachometerantrieb? I point why! So that BMW can earn also after the sale still at my RS. The Tachopese broke 2 days briefly after the cylinder head gasket. Why I should be able also times one week simply only to drive to screw (without). tacho.jpg (17509 Byte)

Errors or better defects adjust now times with each motorcycle, are evenly everything only technique, but why always the same and why in each case my RS?

I am again even times 5000 km to the 60 TKM examination drove. No to drive on I cannot still be no more, my garage (or better the workshop, or still better the museum) am the best place where you RS now should.

Already in the previous week I complained of again once the defective oil screw of the differential gearing. Only the master meant " observes it times, it could however not be also the zero-ring ", no is it. The rear wheel and the rear brake disk are completely oiled, are to still drive I thereby? No rather not. Also the sealseal seal on the right, is again defective.

Swimming brake disks are probably the best invention of all times think I, not at my RS please. But... the longitudinal play resets itself. When braking a very pleasant jerks in the front wheel, simply madly this feeling whom you each time asks itself which ruckelt there in front?

 

And also the neutral gear! simply madly running smooth is which beautiful only my RS kann's not. This time the engine goes out even after longer travel time with to switch simply, premium whom then the rear wheel locked.

I do not want now however no more, I have it simply fullly. As expensively the section (my R 1100 RS) is to actually still become. Surely 63500 km are already a quantity way, but a BMW should be able to do that probably. In addition now still the BMW comes a new transmission to insert wants, but I am to carry 50% of material costs. Why actually, which that transmission is sees BMW nevertheless also and why I am to then pay for this bungle still?

I am strained like it will continue to go with my RS I to the Mr. Vorstandsvorsitzenden Mr. Pischetsrieder also this report sent, with a corresponding writing and around a decision asked. 10 days later still no response. Now well thus still another letter afterwards, with a period position (up to 10.5.96) then geht's to the press. Times see which BMWS then says, is waiting we thus. I continue to write in any case, only to drive I will not probably be able in next time! And but I can thank BMW.

Continuation November 96:

Now then with km 72000 the transmission was changed, improved nevertheless to equal long back and forth with BMW for me for nothing, was thus held for 50% pay extra by the way on this occasion changed clutch even times again 14000 km, not because the lining was down separates points this on the transmission shaft fluttered. However again BMW paid.

That was then also the last section the BMW at least still halfway gesponsert, after states from BMW has I now the time of the warranty and fair trading abandoned... thus must I now myself about my RS worry (excluded the sections on still the legal warranty (6 months) gild)

That do I then also, to examinations are limited from now on to the engine adjusting, which you cannot make now times really itself, all other necessary maintenance work can I also. And perhaps even more carefully than BMWS.

Since with the right fuel injection system the butterfly valve wave had deflected, which caused a very unpleasant knocking in the no-load operation, I had then inserted a new. Price 133, - DM. The left costs then also directly 350, - DM (the wegem potentiometer) and I can only hope it still somewhat hold.

By the way the brake disks can one itself repair. The necessary sections (liaison vehicles) gib's even with BMW, 10 DM the record to 6 pieces.

In addition my recommendation: take 6 section for each brake disk and not like original 3, and pay attention to it the it the section around 2 drilling shift insert. Afterwards is that rattle again completely disappeared.

In the end still this: Since approx. 20 TKM RS without substantial lack, also Portugal route runs was without harms and the engine runs also ever better.

Supplement July 97:

To large Turkey route had RS again times into the workshop. It did not assume gas and had ignition misfires over 3000 rpm. 3 weeks later!!! it was repaired. Reason for the nevertheless extremely long workshop stay was the service display. All important at electronics was changed, without success. Until I gave a note to the display.

Actually a displaying instrument may not disturb electronics nevertheless, which is about so as if the Gluelampe in the headlight precipitates and then the Mopped any longer does not drive. Already again a constructional defect????

Nothing more actually surprises, is me stop a 93ziger model at RS. Now moves forward you, and above all better than ever too. Unfortunate only it in addition used 100000 km.

Perhaps I have now nevertheless, whom also after long and vielem annoyance my dream Mopped found.

Should someone ask me which I for a Mopped buys?

January 1998 I sold at the beginning of my dream. Perhaps the buyer will continue to write history. I require much much joy with my AlpTraum BMW R 1100 RS to it.

Now hopefully again a new nightmare does not begin R 1100 GS with my R 1100 RS
